RE: Proposed CLAPTON POND TESCO
Having just heard the news that Tesco are planning yet another addition to its army of 4,800+ outlets, right here in Clapton, Hackney E5, I felt compelled to write to object to this proposal. How much more do local residents have to put up with Tesco Metros, Tesco Superstores, Tesco Petrol, Tesco Oxygen supply etc, etc? I have already signed my unborn children up to Tesco Private School just so I don’t miss out on what will no doubt be its next enterprise.
But seriously, this is an unwelcome proposal in such a diverse area such as Hackney. Palm 2, the shop that Tesco are trying to raze to the ground (not literally), is a local market, run by local people, for locals! It caters in a way to Clapton’s diverse population that Tesco simply can not. Are there any scruples left (cough loudly)…?? The residents have no use for another Tesco considering there is a Superstore not more than half a mile away at the bottom of Mare Street. This is quite simply, a monopoly. And something that should never have been considered. Does Hackney Council, who preaches diversity as its mantra, consider promoting a company who is by its own admission :
Britain’s biggest retailer that posted underlying pre-tax profits of £3.4bn for the 12 months to the end of February, a 10.1% rise on the previous year…and…Global sales for the last year jumped by 6.8% to slightly more than £62.5bn. In the UK, Tesco sold £42.25bn of goods and services – the equivalent of £80,000 a minute.
£3.4 billion…BILLION!!! £80,000 per minute!!!
Small businesses have already been destroyed by a corrupt, inept and frankly farcical government for the last thirteen years and this is another ridiculous scandal that should be immediately be vetoed. Whether or not this has a Labour government fingerprint on, is subject to question, but this should not be allowed for the sake of Hackney as a borough, Clapton as an area and Palm 2, as a family business who has continually supplied quality food for years.
Tesco’s plans are blunt in the extreme, not to mention unpleasant. If I want processed food that goes off in three hours I’ll shop in a Tesco…oh, hang on…
